Mit diesen Spielen ist uns ein unsch tzbares Propagandamittel in die Hand gegeben worden." Die Vergabe der XI. Olympischen Spiele erfolgte noch an das Berlin der Weimarer Republik, aber mit der Machtergreifung Hitlers im Januar 1933 nderte sich die politische Situation grundlegend und so er ffnete der Diktator Adolf Hitler seine Spiele von Berlin. Hitler nutzte die Spiele, um zum einen der Welt ffentlichkeit ein strahlendes Deutschland zu pr sentieren, welches als Kulturnation den Weg aus der Isolation beschreiten wollte. Auf der anderen Seite waren die Olympischen Spiele das richtige Instrument, um das eigene Volk hinter den F hrer zu stellen und f r die Politik der Nationalsozialisten zu begeistern. Um das umzusetzen wurden umfangreiche Propagandama nahmen vor und w hrend der Spiele durchgef hrt. Der dabei betriebene Aufwand war so gro , dass die Spiele von Berlin nicht nur in sportlicher Hinsicht als "Spiele der Rekorde" in die Geschichtsb cher eingingen. Der Gro teil der deutschen Geschichtsforschung zu den Spielen von Berlin stammt aus den fr hen 1970er Jahren anl sslich der Olympischen Spiele von M nchen 1972. Hierbei ist die stark quellenbezogene Arbeit von Arnd Kr ger "Die Olympischen Spiele von 1936 und die Weltmeinung" herauszuheben. Aus dem englischsprachigen Raum sind vor allem die Werke von Richard D. Mandell "The Nazi Olympics" und Duff Hart-Davis "Hitler's Games" bekannt.
