In this book, the author offers a comprehensive understanding of life among the Native population in India. The book is organized into several chapters that explore various facets of the Madras Presidency in India. The initial chapter focuses on geographical, climatic, and linguistic features. Subsequent chapters delve into subjects including castes and sects, customs, religion, Hindu women, characteristics of the Hindu people, education, and evangelical efforts. These chapters provide insights into aspects like the priestly class, societal norms, religious rituals, and the influence of mission work. The book concludes by examining the success of missions, emphasizing individual conversions, societal changes, and the future prospects of Christianity in India.

Henry Rice, the younger sibling of Lewis, one of the twins born in 1846, pursued his education in London. At the age of 23, he was ordained and became part of the London Mission, an organization. Following a brief assignment in Tamil Nadu near Bangalore, Henry was dispatched to Madras. In 1880, he severed ties with the London Mission and joined the Church of Scotland Mission in Madras, where he notably contributed to the mission at Arkonam, targeting the lowest castes. In 1890, the Religious Tract Society published his well-received book, "Native Life in South India." He likely continued his work in India until around 1905 when he, along with his wife and daughter, retired to Edinburgh.
