In keiner anderen Epoche wurden so viele Balladen geschrieben, und in keiner anderen Epoche wurde diese Gattung so sehr gepflegt wie es in der Romantik der Fall war. Besonders in den slavischen Literaturen kam der Ballade eine enorme Bedeutung zu. Das Interesse dieser Arbeit gilt einem besonderen Balladentypus und zwar dem Typus der naturmagischen Ballade. Diese Arbeit soll die Besonderheit der Entwicklung der russischen naturmagischen Ballade in der Epoche der Romantik darstellen. Die russische Balladenforschung begrenzt sich hauptsächlich auf zwei, auch in dieser Arbeit oft angewendete, wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen. Die erste Arbeit, und zwar "Die Geschichte der russischen Ballade" von F.W. Neumann aus dem Jahre 1936 stellt einen Versuch dar, die Ballade in Russland seit ihren Anfängen im 18 Jahrhundert bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts zu untersuchen. Der Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit liegt auf dem literaturgeschichtlichen Aspekt. Die einzelnen Balladentypen werden dabei nicht konsequent und gründlich untersucht und die Entwicklungslogik wird nicht au erordentlich behandelt. Der Autor verzichtet auf die traditionelle Einteilung der Epoche in Früh-, Hoch-, und Spätromantik und differenziert nur zwischen der empfindsam-romantischen und der realistisch-romantischen Ballade. Die Mehrzahl der Texte wird überhaupt nicht analysiert. Die zweite Arbeit von Michael R. Katz "The Literary Ballad in Early Nineteenth Century Russian Literature" von 1976 beschäftigt sich konkreter mit der Ballade der Romantik. Die Textanalysen konzentrieren sich meistens auf die Behandlung der Stilistik. Die Besonderheiten der Entwicklung der Ballade im 19. Jahrhundert werden nicht untersucht.
