A telephone call to Ukraine from the Oval Office brought Ukraine to the forefront of the American public in 2019. Although international condemnation and sanctions plague Russian adventurism in Ukraine, Putin retains Donbass and Crimea, threatening to take more. Can President Biden prevent an unfolding tragedy? How should the West (and specifically the United States) respond to support Ukraine democratic capitalism and why? This book provides a historical review of the Ukraine experience, illuminates challenges and opportunities and a summary of the current scandal, but (perhaps more importantly) emphasizes the importance of Ukraine independence in the context of European security moving forward.

Pete Godston received the Julius Turner Prize for work in Political Science as an undergraduate at The Johns Hopkins University. Godston was commissioned in the U. S. Army upon graduation from Hopkins, serving as a Regular Army officer in Korea and Germany. He left active duty to attend Harvard Business School, where he received an MBA in 1989. Since then Pete has worked for numerous tech, consulting and government contracting firms, including Sun Microsystems, Software Emancipation, Spacenet, Lockheed Martin and CACI International. He continued his service through the National Guard and Reserves, including leading a battalion-sized task force in Iraq, retiring from the Army Reserves in 2011. Pete lives near his two daughters in Virginia, where he is working on a big data solutions start-up. This is his second book.
