Dans la Grande Armée de Napoléon 1er, il y a les hommes, mais il y a aussi les chevaux. Eux qui pendant des siècles ont porté les hommes à la guerre, et à qui on n'a jamais rien demandé, ne sont-ils pas aussi des "obscurs et sans-grades" ? La parole est donnée au cheval Nestor, qui rejoignit l'armée impériale au lendemain d'Austerlitz, et participa à l'aventure de la Grande Armée jusqu'à Waterloo. En compagnie de son cavalier, le simple soldat Henri Fourneau, il va suivre Napoléon dans sa conquête de l'Europe, mais aussi dans la retraite de Russie et affrontera la coalition des alliés au cours de la bataille qui mettra fin au Premier Empire. "Nos chevaux, ce sont nos jambes", dit le cavalier. Loin des spéculations politiques, des stratégies militaires, des luttes de pouvoir, les soldats, pour beaucoup arrachés au monde paysan, souvent illettrés, soignent leurs chevaux qu'ils considèrent comme leurs amis, cherchent à tirer de petits profits et méditent sur les desseins des grands. Avancer, se battre, tuer... La guerre, c'est leur métier, celui du soldat et celui du cheval.

Micheline Cumant est violoncelliste et musicologue, auteur notamment d'ouvrages pédagogiques et de rééditions et transcriptions pour violoncelle. Elle a également publié plusieurs romans aussi bien historiques qu'ésotériques ou policiers. Micheline Cumant is a cellist and musicologist, author of pedagogical works and of reeditions as well as cello transcriptions. She has also published several novels, historical, esoterical and murder stories.
