Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland gilt im intemationalen Vergleich als hochentwickelter Sozialstaat, in dem ein umfassendes sozialpolitisches Leistungsangebot bereitsteht. Dennoch kommt es z.T. offensichtlich nicht zu einer befriedigenden Versorgung mit sozialpolitischen Dienstleistungen: seit Mitte der 70er Jahre entwickelte sich eine Oberwiegend sozialpolitisch ausgerichtete Selbsthilfebewegung. Wahrend die neue Selbsthilfebewegung in zunehmendem Mafie wissenschaftlich erschlossen wird, fehlt es bisher an grundlegenden Analysen der ntstehungsursachen der neuen Selbsthilfebewegung in dem Sozialstaat Bundesrepublik. Dabei stellt sich besonders die Frage nach der Leistungsfahigkeit und auch der Leistungsgrenze eines hochentwickelten Sozialstaates einerseits und jener der neuen Selbsthilfebewegung andererseits. Ferner ist yon Interesse, ob und wie es zwischen diesen sozialpolitischen Sektoren zu produktiven Kooperationsebenen kommen kann. Die vorIi egende Untersuchung ist die gekOrzte Fassung meiner Habilitationsarbeit, die 1987 an der Universitat Stuttgart eingereicht und angenommen wurde. FOr besonders anregende Diskussionen danke ich Frau Prof. Endress und Herm Prof. Schnabl. Ferner gilt meln Dank einer Reihe von Selbsthllfelnstitutionen und -Selbsthilfefachleuten" fOr vielfaltige Anregungen und Unterstotzungen, wobei ich die Selbsthilfezentren in Berlin und MOnchen hervorheben mochte.
