Spater wird gezeigt, daJ3 unter veranderten 5 Umstanden diese alten Vorstellungen aber auch heute wieder auftauchen - Die orgallische Chemie ging zunachst ihren eigenen Weg und schuf sich libel' die Typentheorie GERHARDT; und die Strulcturtheorie KEKULEs sowie die Einbeziehung raumlicher V orstellungen durch v AN'T HOFF und LE BEL ihr eigenes, fast voll- endet brauchbares System, aber ohne eine wohlfundierte Erldarung von der Art und dem Wesen der in den Molekeln herrschenden Bindungskrafte zu geben. Den AnstoJ3 zur Weiterentwicklung unserer Vorstellungen liber den Bindungs- zustand del' Atome in den Molekeln gaben fast gleichzeitig das organische Experi- 6 ment und die physikalische Theorie. M. GOMBERG elltdeckte im Jahre 1900 das erste jreie Radikal, womit zunachst das vieltausendfach beobachtete Prinzip der konstantell "Vierwertigkeit" des Kohlenstoffatoms durchbrochen schien und die Frage nach der Natur dieser Bindungskrafte dringlich gestellt wurde.
