Unbeantwortet bleibt allerdings, ob sich das psychoanalytische Behandlungs- und Analyseverfahren auch auf fiktive Beispiele oder historische Überlieferungen anwenden lässt. Der in dieser Arbeit behandelte Fall des Malers Christoph Haitzmann stellt ein solches historisch-literarisches Beispiel dar. Zum allgemeinen Verständnis ist zu erklären, dass Freud die Behandlung und die damit verbundenen Aufzeichnungen nicht selbst durchgeführt hat. Sein Fall bezieht sich auf schriftliche Überlieferungen eines "Herrn Hofrats Dr. R. Payer-Thurn, Direktor der ehemals k.k. Fideikommi bibliothek in Wien". Freud betitelt den Fall Haitzmann als "Teufelsneurose", womit er eine neurotische Erkrankung bei Haitzmann diagnostiziert. Freud vermerkt beim Fall Haitzmann, dass es ihm nicht um eine reine Anwendung seiner psychoanalytischen Theorie geht. Fragwürdig ist jedoch, worauf Freud seine Diagnose einer Teufelsneurose stützt, wenn er, wie oben genannt, keine psychoanalytischen Thesen beweisen will, aber letztendlich ein psychoanalytisches Phänomen diagnostiziert. Es sei auch gar nicht seine [Freuds] Absicht, diesen Fall als Beweismittel für die Gültigkeit der Psychoanalyse zu verwerten, er setze vielmehr die Psychoanalyse als gültig voraus und verwende diese dazu, um die dämonologische Erkrankung des Malers aufzuklären.
