Eric R. Kandel hat das Center for Neurobiology and Behavior an der Columbia University in New York gegründet, wo er derzeit Professor und Forschungsleiter am Howard Hughes Medical Institute ist. Er war Präsident der amerikanischen Society for Neuroscience und gehört der National Academy of Sciences an. Die "Bibel" der Neurowissenschaften Principles of Neural Science entstand unter seiner maßgeblichen Mitwirkung. Seine Autobiographie Auf der Suche nach dem Gedächtnis war ein internationaler Erfolg. Im Jahr 2000 erhielt Kandel (zusammen mit Arvid Carlsson und Paul Greengard) den Medizinnobelpreis. Zu seinen zahlreichen weiteren Auszeichnungen zählen der Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Prize, die National Medal of Science und der Wolf Prize in Biology and Medicine. Seit 2008 ist er Ehrenbürger von Wien, seiner Geburtsstadt.
