Tác giả sách này, Hòa Thượng Thích Như Điển, viết trong Lời Nói Đầu lần xuất bản năm 2014:

"Nếu ai đó có hỏi rằng: Tôi sống ở đâu lâu nhất, thì có thể trả lời là nước Đức. Vì nơi này tôi đã dừng chân lại đây từ hơn 37 năm nay (1977-2014). Bây giờ là năm 2022 thì đã 45 năm, gần nửa thế kỷ. Vì vậy về nước Đức, tôi cũng sẽ quan tâm để viết thêm một tác phẩm nữa, mặc dầu trước đây tôi đã viết quyển "Cảm Tạ Xứ Đức" rồi. Nước thứ hai tôi sống lâu hơn, đó là quê mẹ Việt Nam, trong vòng gần 23 năm; nghĩa là từ khi sinh ra (1949) đến năm 1972 khi tôi từ giã quê mình để sang Nhật Bản du học. Đây là một đề tài không nhỏ, tôi cũng sẽ cố gắng hoàn thành một tác phẩm về quê nhà trong nỗi nhớ ở một tương lai gần. Nước thứ 3, nơi tôi đã sống nhiều năm, đó là Nhật Bản, kể từ đầu năm 1972 đến gần giữa năm 1977. Nghĩa là hơn 5 năm như vậy; nên tôi sẽ có nhiều vấn đề để viết trong tác phẩm này".

Đúng vậy, tác phẩm "Cảm Tạ Xứ Đức" đã được Viên Giác Tùng Thư chúng tôi tái bản năm rồi cả phần tiếng Việt và tiếng Đức đã được nhiều độc giả ủng hộ. Lần này chúng tôi chọn tái bản tác phẩm "Nước Nhật trong lòng tôi" vì những lý do sau.

-Ngay cả khi xuất bản lần đầu sách này đã được đón nhận và tiêu thụ rất nhanh. Nhiều độc giả đã liên lạc hỏi nhưng chúng tôi chưa có điều kiện cho in lại.

-Tuy tác giả ghi là sống ở đây chỉ ở đây chỉ 5 năm, nhưng đây lại là 5 năm quyết định cả cuộc đời của tác giả về sau. Từ một học sinh trung học cắp sách đến trường, từ một học tăng sống bình yên trong chùa, bắt đầu từ bây giờ tác giả phải tập sống đời sống tự lập, ăn nhờ ở đậu ở xứ người trong một điều kiện tài chánh khá eo hẹp. Mọi sinh hoạt thường nhật, từ nếp sống cho đến lề lối học tập tư duy hoàn toàn mới trong một xứ sở mới lạ. Mới từ môi trường học của một sinh viên đại học, mới về ngôn ngữ, mới về nếp sống sinh hoạt thiền môn và cả với thời tiết khắc nghiệt của xứ Phù Tang, như một bài thơ tác giả từng viết.

Sách này là một tác phẩm hay, không chỉ viết về đời sống sinh viên du học Nhật Bản thuần túy, hay chỉ nói về đất nước con người xứ này, mà còn nói thêm về cuộc sống trong một ngôi chùa truyền thống Nhật Bản; nơi mà những người trách nhiệm điều hành ngôi chùa lại là một gia đình có vợ chồng con cái.
