Sinnhaftes Denken geht mit Verstehen einher. Man möchte sich Dinge und Zusammenhänge erklären. Man will Funktionszusammenhänge begreifen. Manche wollen sogar " erkenne[n], was die Welt im Innersten zusammenhält" [1]. Der Traum von einer allumfassenden Erklärung unserer Welt ist alt. In Goethes " Faust" geht die tragische Hauptfigur dafür einen Bund mit dem Teufel ein. Die Wissenschaft erforscht ständig neue Phänomene aber es gibt immer noch viele Dinge, die selbst für den intelligentesten Denker unvorstellbar sind. So zum Beispiel die Unendlichkeit des Weltalls. Nichts desto trotz versucht sich die Menschheit ständig an neuen Erklärungsversuchen - und diese verhalten sich wie eine Limesfunktion der Mathematik: Sie nähern sich immer näher einem Punkt an, aber werden ihn niemals erreichen können. Dabei wird in vielen Teilbereichen geforscht und Details werden erklärt und verstanden. Was bisher noch nicht sehr viele hervorgebracht haben, ist eine (Makro-)Theorie, welche versucht, unsere Welt in gesellschaftlicher Hinsicht zu erklären. Niklas Luhmann hat sein Leben einer Theorie gewidmet: Der Systemtheorie. Richtig verstanden und angewandt lässt sich mit ihr die soziale Ordnung in der Modernen Gesellschaft annähernd erschöpfend beschreiben, ohne dabei jedoch einen Totalitätsanspruch zu erheben.[2] Luhmann interessieren dabei die sozialen Prozesse. Diese sind nur aus ihrer eigenen Logik heraus - d.h. "aus der eigenen Logik sozialer Prozesse zu erklären"[3]. Was tautologisch klingen mag, versuchte schon Durkheim, indem er "Soziales nur durch Soziales [...] erklären"[4] wollte. Es ist Illusion, anzunehmen, man könnte sein Werk in einer Hausarbeit cirka fünfundzwanzig Seiten erschöpfen
