About The Editor: Gustav Solomon Oppert (1836–1908) was a German Indologist and Sanskrit scholar. He served as a professor of Sanskrit at Presidency College, Madras, from 1872 to 1893, and contributed significantly to the study of Dravidian languages and Indian history. Oppert's notable works include On the Classification of Languages (1879) and Contributions to the History of Southern India (1882). He researched the Dravidians as India's original inhabitants and edited the Telugu book Ramarajiyamu by Venkayya. After leaving India in 1893, Oppert traveled through North India, China, and the U.S. before returning to Berlin, where he died in 1908.
