La presente versión de Noli Me Tangere fue corregida por Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. Por ello difiere en ciertos pasajes de la edición original.

Rizal escribió esta novela sobre la sociedad filipina del siglo XIX en medio de su actividad política, y pretendió denunciar los desmanes del gobierno español y sus instituciones religiosas. Lo hizo a través de este relato, en el que comparecen las clases sociales imperantes, el amor y la reflexión histórica.

Este es el texto más célebre de José Rizal. La novela creó tanta controversia que solo algunos días después de su primer regreso a Filipinas (1887), el gobernador general Emilio Terrero le informó que su novela era subversiva. Sin embargo, algunos ejemplares de Noli me tangere circularon de contrabando.

Luego, cuando Rizal volvió a las Filipinas después de terminar sus estudios médicos, lo deportaron a Dapitan, en la isla de Mindanao. Más adelante lo encarcelaron por incitar a la rebelión a través de sus escritos. En 1896, a la edad de treinta y cinco años, murió ante un pelotón de fusilamiento.

A fines de octubre, don Santiago de los Santos, conocido vulgarmente con el nombre de Capitán Tiago, daba una cena, que era el tema de todas las conversaciones en Binondo, en los demás arrabales y hasta dentro de la ciudad. Capitán Tiago pasaba entonces por el hombre más rumboso, y sabía todo el mundo que su casa, como su país, no cerraba las puertas a nadie, como no fuese a las innovaciones provechosas y a las ideas nuevas y atrevidas.

Con la rapidez del relámpago corrió la noticia en el mundo de los parásitos que Dios crió en su infinita bondad y tan cariñosamente multiplica en Manila.

Dábase esta cena en una casa de la calle de Anloague. Era un edificio bastante grande, construido al estilo del país y situado a orillas del río Pasig, llamado por algunos ría de Binondo, y que desempeña, como todos los ríos de Manila, el múltiple papel de baño, alcantarilla, lavadero, pesquería, medio de transporte y comunicación y hasta proporciona agua potable si lo tiene por conveniente el chino aguador. Es de notar que esta poderosa arteria del arrabal, en donde abunda más el tráfico, apenas cuenta con un viejo puente de madera, en una distancia de más de un kilómetro.
