Northanger Abbey is a novel written by Jane Austen, first published in 1818. The story follows Catherine Morland, a young and naive girl from a small village who is invited to stay with wealthy relatives in Bath, a fashionable town in England. Catherine is a voracious reader of Gothic novels and is convinced that she will encounter similar adventures in Bath. In Bath, Catherine meets Henry Tilney, a charming and witty young man who introduces her to his family and takes her on trips to their home, Northanger Abbey. Catherine is thrilled to finally experience the kind of adventures she has read about in her novels, but soon realizes that reality is not as exciting or dangerous as fiction. As Catherine navigates the social scene in Bath, she encounters other characters who challenge her assumptions about people and relationships. She befriends Isabella Thorpe, a manipulative and self-centered young woman who leads Catherine astray, and falls for the handsome but insincere John Thorpe. Throughout the novel, Austen satirizes the Gothic novel genre and the societal norms of her time. Northanger Abbey is a witty and entertaining novel that explores themes of love, friendship, and the dangers of letting one's imagination run wild.THIS little work was finished in the year 1803, and intended for immediate publication. It was disposed of to a bookseller, it was even advertised, and why the business proceeded no farther, the author has never been able to learn. That any bookseller should think it worth-while to purchase what he did not think it worth-while to publish seems extraordinary.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
