A Journey of Loss, Grief, and Resilience
Notes from Daddy follows Henri, a young Black child grappling with the tragic loss of his father. Set during the early days of the public school system, Henri's life is shaped by grief and the challenges of navigating an education system that often overlooks the unique struggles of children like him. Through Henri's journey, author William H. Johnson provides a powerful critique of systemic racism and the flaws in the educational system.
A Sneak Peek into the Foundations of a Family
This work of African-American literature provides an intimate window into Henri's family and relationships and the social issues young students face. With deep empathy, the narrative shows the inner life and prolonged grief of a child dealing with stigma and hostility day after day.
A Heartfelt Discovery
After his father's passing, Henri finds letters left just for him. These notes contain hard-won wisdom to help Henri survive and thrive as a young black man in a complex world.
