James Ramsay Drummond (1851–1921) was a Scottish-born civil servant and amateur botanist in British India, educated at New College, Oxford. Descended from notable botanical figures—collector Thomas Drummond and settler-botanist James Drummond—he authored Notes on Agave and Furcraea in India, a landmark study of these succulent fiber crops. Drummond’s work details their taxonomy, morphology, ecology, and geographic distribution, alongside cultivation practices, pest and drought resilience, and economic and medicinal applications. His comparison of species for fiber quality and yield, together with propagation and harvesting recommendations, provided an essential reference for botanists, horticulturists, and colonial agricultural development.
