About The Book

About The Author

Colonel William Henry Sykes (1790–1872) was a pioneering English naturalist, military officer, and politician renowned for his contributions to ornithology, statistics, and Indology. Serving with the British Army in India, he conducted extensive surveys on the region's natural history and population, including works on the birds, fishes, and land-crabs of the Deccan. Sykes was a founding member of the Royal Statistical Society and published several influential studies on the administration and economy of British India. He also contributed to the understanding of Indian religious, moral, and political conditions, advocating for educational reforms. His legacy includes significant contributions to natural science and statistical analysis.
