Le 15 ao�t 1947 les Indes britanniques ont cess� d'exister. L'Indian Independence Bill, vot�e par le Parlement britannique, entre alors en vigueur. Mais au prix d'un terrible sacrifice: la Partition des Indes entre, d'une part, l'Inde hindoue de Jawaharlal Nehru, qui compte alors 300 millions d'habitants et, d'autre part, le Pakistan musulman de Muhammad Ali Jinnah, peupl� de 100 millions d'habitants. Ce dernier est lui-m�me �clat� en deux entit�s g�ographiques situ�es de part et d'autre de l'Inde: le Pakistan occidental et le Pakistan oriental, qui deviendra le Bangladesh en 1971 � l'issue de la troisi�me guerre indo-pakistanaise. Et d�s le 21 ao�t 1947, les massacres commencent au Punjab. C'est le Cachemire, musulman � 80 % mais dirig� par un maharajah hindou, qui focalise depuis maintenant presque 80 ans la rivalit� entre les deux �tats.
