Nottingham's White Friars: A History of the Carmelite House is a serious documentary study of one of medieval Nottingham's most important but least fully understood religious sites. Drawing together royal records, borough material, later antiquarian tradition, and topographical evidence, Patrick Fleckney reconstructs the history of the Carmelite friary known as the White Friars and restores it to its proper place in the story of the town. The book traces the friary from its earliest secure appearance in the thirteenth century through the formation and enlargement of its precinct, its devotional life, its patrons and benefactors, and its role within the legal, religious, and social fabric of Nottingham. It examines questions of foundation, site development, lay support, sanctuary, conflict, continuity, and dissolution, while keeping a firm distinction between documented fact, later tradition, and what cannot yet be proved. The chapter sequence moves from the earliest royal evidence and reputed foundation story to the growth of the precinct, the life of the house in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the later history, myth, folklore, and afterlife of the site. Part local history, part medieval reconstruction, this book is written for readers interested in Nottingham's past, monastic and mendicant history, urban topography, and the survival of the medieval town beneath the modern city. It offers a carefully argued and accessible account of a lost religious house whose presence still echoes in timber, stone, memory, and place.
