Um diesen Herausforderungen standzuhalten und damit die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit eines Unternehmens zu sichern, müssen sich die Unternehmen den steigenden Anforderungen des Marktes anpassen und sich auf risikoreichere Projekte einlassen. Hinsichtlich dieser Entwicklungen sind Unternehmen den zunehmenden externen und internen Risiken ausgesetzt. Aufgrund dessen ist es in diesen Zeiten umso wichtiger vorhandene Risiken frühzeitig zu erkennen und seine Chancen sinnvoll zu nutzen, um existenzbedrohende Schäden zu vermeiden. Viele Unternehmen sind sich der Notwendigkeit eines nachhaltigen Risikomanagements bewusst. Dennoch zeigen zahlreiche bekannte gescheiterte Projekte, wie z.B. das Bauprojekt Elbphilharmonie, dass das Risikomanagement längst noch nicht in allen Unternehmen etabliert wurde. Dieses und weitere diverse Beispiele von gescheiterten Projekten sowie zahlreiche Studien zeigen, dass der Handlungsbedarf im Umgang mit Risiken noch nicht von allen Unternehmen erkannt wurde oder auch bei vielen Unternehmen eine Hilflosigkeit im Umgang mit dem Risikomanagement herrscht. Bei näherer Betrachtung dieser Thematik hat sich die Problematik herausgestellt, dass noch nicht alle Unternehmen die Notwendigkeit und Nutzen des Risikomanagements erkannt haben. Hinsichtlich dessen lie sich folgende These ableiten: "Der Einsatz eines Risikomanagements ist bei der Durchführung aller Projekte trotz seiner Komplexität unerlässlich und zwingend notwendig".
