Nuestros peces fluviales es fundamentalmente una obra de lectura temática. A pesar de los términos científicos que se leen en ella --- incluye un glosario que los aclara --- no está ni mucho menos dirigida a los especialistas en la materia; sino al lector medio de cualquier edad comprendida entre la adolescencia y la madurez.

En cierto sentido, este libro viene a llenar parte del vacío informativo que en los últimos dos decenios han estado creando las Guías de los peces de Europa y de España, publicaciones extranjeras admirables en todos los conceptos pero en las que --- quizás por falta de espacio --- se representan muy pocas de nuestras especies y se da de ellas una descripción excesivamente sintetizada.

La primera parte de nuestro libro reúne artículos no extensos en los cuales se comentan aspectos variados v. gr. el estado actual de la hidrosfera, los nombres de nuestros ríos principales y sus afluentes, y la clasificación sistemática de los peces; haciéndose también un resumen de la ictiología del pasado, con mención de nombres de ictiólogos hist-ricos. Contraviniendo la existente costumbre de dedicar en libros de este estilo unas páginas a la pesca deportiva de río, no hemos redactado ni un solo párrafo con semejante objetivo, por considerarlo en esta ocasión innecesario.

En la segunda parte o Rudimentos de ictiología se incluyen conocimientos elementales de morfología y estructura interna de los vertebrados acuáticos, comentándose también los caracteres esenciales y el funcionamiento fisiológico de sus principales órganos. La tercera parte trata de la descripción e ilustración de las especies de nuestra fauna ictiológica continental, formando un catálogo que es la parte más voluminosa del libro. Cada artículo de pez comentado en detalle incluye una ficha con nombres científicos y vulgares de la especie.
