Das Fachgebiet Nuklearmedizin ist in einem AusmaB in Weiterentwicklung begriffen, daB es schwierig erscheint, zu diesem Zeitpunkt ein Handbuch herauszugeben. Es sollte fUr die diagnostischen und therapeutischen MaBnahmen nicht nur eine zeitliche Dar- stellung der methodischen und klinischen Fortschritte beinhalten, sondern auch lang- zeitlich eingefUhrte und fUr die Klinik und Praxis standardisierte Verfahren und ihre Ergebnisse darstellen. So war es notig, wahrend des Entstehens dieses Handbuch- bandes einzelne Kapitel schon wieder zu tiberarbeiten. Die nuklearmedizinische Herz- und Kreislaufdiagnostik, die Moglichkeiten der Anwendung von Radiodiagnostika in der Onkologie, sowie die Fortschritte auf dem Sektor der "single photon" Emissions- Computer-Tomographie und der Positronen-Tomographie werden auch aus diesem Grunde noch nicht aufgenommen, sondern sind fUr einen weiteren Erganzungsband in Bearbeitung. DargesteHt werden Entwicklung, Standardisierung und Effektivitat der Verfahren, die als fUr die Klinik eingefUhrt gelten. Die Darstellung ist nach Organen bzw. Organ- systemen sowie nach Spezialgebieten aufgegliedert. Es ist gelungen, fUr die einzelnen Kapitel entsprechend international anerkannte Mitarbeiter zu gewinnen. Offensichtlich ist die Wandlung der Nuklearmedizin von der zunachst getrennt durch- gefUhrten Lokalisations- und Funktionsdiagnostik durch eine zweite Phase ihrer Ent- wicklung, deren Basis die Stoffwechselfunktion und die Pathophysiologie ist. Ermoglicht wurde dies durch die Geratetechnik und die standigen Neuentwicklungen auf dem Sektor der Radiopharmazeutika (siehe Bd. XVII dieses Handbuches). "Functional imaging" ist das Schlagwort. Hier werden bestimmte Stoffwechselfunktionen nach Applikation radioaktiver Stoffe in den einzelnen Organregionen lokalisiert als Bild dargestellt. Auch die Knochenszintigraphie ist im Grunde genommen nichts anderes.
