Das Anliegen dieses Buches ist die Prasentation numerischer Methoden fUr partielle DC in einem Kontext, der fUr Ingenieure interessant ist. Dies bedeutet einerseits, daB versucht wird, physikalisch sinnvolle Probleme zu behandeln und gegebenenfalls auf physikalisch und technisch relevante Probleme aus der Praxis Bezug zu nehmen. Andererseits sind Probleme, wie sie in der Praxis vorkommen, zu komplex, urn umfassend gelost werden zu konnen. Wir haben sie daher (sehr) vereinfacht betrachtet. Die Anwendung numerischer Methoden hat immer mit einer realistischen Schatzung des gemachten Fehlers einherzugehen. Darum haben wir versucht, sowohl dem Entwurfsaspekt (Wie komme ich zu einer FEM-Naherung?) als auch dem Bewertungsaspekt (Wie genau ist sie?) die Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken, die fUr praktische Anwendungen notwendig is!. Es ist selbstredend unmoglich, alle Methoden in einem Buch dieses Umfangs erschopfend zu behandeln. Wo dem wiBbegierigen Leser Informationen absichtlich vorenthalten werden, sind Literaturverweise fUr weitergehende Studien zu finden. Es wurde danach gestrebt, die Einteilung des Stoffs so zu gestalten, daB der praktische Teil unabhangig von der mathematischen Theorie studiert werden kann. Der Leserkreis dieses Buches sollte Vorkenntnisse in (numerischer) Analysis, linearer Algebra und gewohnlichen DC haben. Flir die Kapitel, die die mathematischen Grundlagen beschrei- ben, ist auBerdem Basiswissen in Funktionalanalysis und Integrationstheorie wlinschenswert. Die Autoren sprechen ihren Dank an Dr. C.
