In Industrienationen ist die Vergabe von Unternehmenstätigkeiten an ausländische Anbieter seit Jahrzehnten gängige Praxis. Das Phänomen wird als Offshoring, weitaus häufiger jedoch als Outsourcing, bezeichnet. Die ökonomischen Konsequenzen werden kontrovers diskutiert. Befürworter von Offshoring verweisen darauf, dass das Phänomen Offshoring auf längere Sicht den Lebensstandard in allen beteiligten Ländern erhöhen kann. Dies wird vor allem durch positive Produktivitätseffekte erreicht. Die Produktionsketten konnten durch revolutionäre Entwicklungen in der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie aufgebrochen werden. Fallende Kosten für den Transport von Gütern sorgten für ein erstes Entflechten der Lieferketten. Nun war es möglich und auch ökonomisch sinnvoll, Güter weit weg vom Endverbraucher zu produzieren. Der internationale Handel nahm Fahrt auf. Danach fielen auch die internationalen Kommunikations- und Koordinationskosten, diese Entwicklung begünstigte die zweite Entflechtung der Lieferketten. Die Stufen der Produktion im verarbeitenden Gewerbe mussten nun nicht mehr in räumlicher Nähe voneinander stehen. Dies führte zu Offshoring und einem gro en Zuwachs an Handel mit Zwischenprodukten, dem sogenannten "Trade of Tasks". Doch damit nicht genug, auch die dritte Entflechtung ist schon auf demWeg. Zunehmend können auch Bürotätigkeiten ausgelagert werden. Diese Entwicklung steht noch am Anfang, wird sich aber vermutlich fortsetzen, auch im Hinblick auf die Verbesserung der Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten.
