In On the Deficiencies in the Present Administration of Hindu Law (1870), Theodor Goldstücker critiques the British administration of Hindu law in India. Delivered at the East India Association, the paper highlights the inadequacies and inconsistencies in the legal system, especially its failure to effectively integrate Hindu customs and legal practices with British colonial law. Goldstücker argues for a more informed and culturally sensitive approach to administering Hindu law, stressing the importance of understanding traditional Hindu legal principles. His paper calls for reform and better training for judges, ensuring a fairer and more respectful application of Hindu legal traditions within the colonial system.

Theodor Goldstücker (1821–1872) was a German Sanskrit scholar born in Königsberg, Prussia. Initially studying Sanskrit at Königsberg and Bonn, he later moved to Paris, where he edited a German translation of Prabodhacandrodaya. In Berlin, his political views led to his expulsion during the 1848 revolutions. In 1850, he moved to London, where he was invited by H. H. Wilson and became a professor at University College London in 1852. Goldstücker worked on a revised edition of Wilson's Sanskrit dictionary and published Panini: His Place in Sanskrit Literature (1861). He founded the Sanskrit Text Society and was involved in various scholarly organizations.
