The kidneys are two reddish-brown bean-shaped organs present on the left and right sides in the retroperitoneal space. Nephrology is the area of medical science which studies kidneys and the diseases related to it. Onconephrology is a nephrology subspecialty that focuses on kidney related complications in cancer patients. Cancer can affect the kidneys in two ways: by infiltration of a tumor from other body part into a kidney or by creation of nephrotoxic chemicals. With the emergence of novel targeted therapeutic medicines and intense chemotherapy regimens, different types of nephrotoxicity have increased. Kidney injury in cancer patients can potentially be caused as a side effect of cancer treatment. Such cancer patients have reduced renal function. Clinical trials have shown that cancer patients with underlying chronic kidney disease (CKD) have worse cancer outcomes as compared to patients that do not have CKD.
