Pat Hart Brunström was born in Liverpool and grew up in Oxford. Her time growing up was divided between a boarding school in the city and a cottage on the river Thames without gas, electricity, or running water and a mile from the nearest road. This home was an extraordinary place watched over by an extraordinary woman, her mother.

Her parents are divorced, and she is convinced she would have had a duller life had they stayed together. She attended Teacher Training College in Bath and taught in a primary school in Oxford where she met and married her husband. They have worked, studied, and travelled together ever since. She has taught English, dance, and drama and currently works as a 'seaside landlady' in Hastings, England.
