Viele Menschen in modernen Gesellschaften sind heutzutage mit dem Internet vertraut, und nutzen dortige Handelsplattformen als virtuellen Marktplatz. Der Oberbegriff Electronic-Business umfasst alle Formen der digitalen Abwicklung von Geschäftsprozessen zwischen Unternehmen und deren Kunden über globale öffentlich und private Netze. Diese breite Definition des Begriffs E-Business schlie t vielfältige Facetten und Anwendungsbereiche zur individuellen Nutzung und Gestaltung dieser Konzepte für das eigene Unternehmen mit ein. Der Begriff Electronic-Commerce steht als Oberbegriff für den Handel im Internet. In der deutschen Handelsgesellschaft ist die Nutzung unterschiedlicher Absatzkanäle kein neues Phänomen. Schon lange (als Pionier der Mehrkanal-Absatzstrategie gilt Neckermann im Jahr 1950) ermöglichen Unternehmen parallel neben dem Einkauf in stationären Ladengeschäften auch die Bestellung über Kataloge. Allerdings wird erst durch die Internet-Einbindung in den Handel von Multi-Channel-Systemen gesprochen, vorher sprach man von traditionellen Mehrkanalsystemen.
