Durch den Verkauf über das Internet werden sich die Regeln des Wettbewerbs in den verschiedenen Branchen weiterhin stark verändern. In Deutschland befindet sich der Online-Handel weiter auf dem Vormarsch und gehört schon jetzt zu einem der führenden in Europa, zumal die Internet-Nutzerschaft täglich steigt. Es ist jedoch auch festzustellen, dass bei vielen Unternehmen die anfängliche Internet-Euphorie schnell in Ernüchterung umgeschlagen ist, da oftmals die Erwartungen zu hoch waren oder aber einfach das Know-how zur Umsetzung fehlte. In der Planung und Umsetzung von Geschäftsabwicklungen und dem Online-Verkauf hatten viele Unternehmen noch keine Erfahrungen vorzuweisen und waren von daher sehr unsicher. Ihnen fehlte die klare Vorstellung, ob das Medium Internet überhaupt als Distributionskanal verwendet werden kann, und wenn ja, in welcher Form. Heute steht fest, dass sich das Internet auf jeden Fall als weiterer Distributionskanal eignet und zukünftig immer stärker zum Einsatz kommen wird. Vorzugsweise stellen Unternehmen ihre Produkte und Dienstleistungen mittels eines Produktkatalogs über einen eigenen Online-Shop ins Internet. Das Wirtschaftsleben der heutigen Zeit ist gekennzeichnet durch den globalen Wettbewerb, dem Faktor Zeit und den ständig steigenden Anforderungen der Kunden. Um all dem gerecht zu werden, gewinnt die Abwicklung von Geschäften über das Internet und der elektronische Handel (Electronic Commerce) immer mehr an Bedeutung.
