""Opals From Sand"" is a historical fiction novel written by Mary H. Steer and published in 1912. The story is set in the early days of the Bridge of Hope, a fictional settlement in Australia. The main character, a young woman named Jean, moves to the settlement with her family in hopes of starting a new life. However, they soon realize that life in the harsh outback is not as easy as they had hoped. Jean's father struggles to make a living as a farmer, while her mother tries to adapt to the new way of life. Despite the challenges, Jean finds solace in her friendship with a local Aboriginal girl named Kora. Through Kora, Jean learns about the culture and traditions of the indigenous people, and begins to see the beauty in their way of life. However, tensions between the settlers and the Aboriginal people begin to rise, and Jean finds herself caught in the middle of a conflict that threatens to tear the community apart. Throughout the novel, Steer explores themes of cultural identity, racism, and the struggle for survival in a harsh and unforgiving environment.
