Mi nombre es Policarpo Alfonso Machado C, nací en el corregimiento de Almirante, provincia de Bocas del toro, República de Panamá, egresado de la escuela de aprendices, programa de formación profesional de la Comisión del Canal de Panamá (hoy Autoridad del Canal de Panamá) como constructor de buques y Buzo III clase. Obtuve un diploma en tecnología en el Panamá Canal College y realicé estudios en Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology, la Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá, la Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencias y Tecnologia, Pennfoster College. Poseo una certificación como intérprete médico de la Asian Health Services Healthcare Interpreters training y obtuve una certificación del gobierno panameño como Traductor Publico Autorizado de los idiomas Inglés /Español/ Inglés. Después de laborar 25 años como técnico de diques, luego supervisor del taller de carpintería y capitán de diques secos, quise contribuir con mi experiencia, creando un libro de referencias para capitanes de diques, debido a la escasez de material impreso en español sobre el tema. El texto abarca el estudio de los elementos fundamentales que describen la geometría del buque, los métodos aproximados para cálculos de áreas y volúmenes y las estructuras de los distintos tipos de diques. Se dedicaron unos capítulos al repaso de las soluciones matemáticas, que se pueden aplicar en algunos de los problemas que enfrentamos con frecuencia en los diques secos, a la parte de la mecánica básica que estudia las cargas y reacciones, los efectos del asiento del buque sobre los picaderos bajo el codaste y al análisis de las cargas variadas sobre las camas irregularmente ensambladas. Seguidamente explicamos la secuencia de las actividades que conforman la operación de varada, empezando por la recopilación de datos importantes del buque, los materiales que se utilizan en la fabricación de las camas, los replanteos de líneas, la fabricación y el emplazamiento de picaderos, las técnicas empleadas en las maniobras para cada dique, la contabilidad de pesos durante la estadía, la desvarada, la implementación de la seguridad en el dique y la formación profesional del capitán del dique y su personal.
