Der Zusammenhang zwischen Optimierung einerseits und Simulation andererseits wurde lange Zeit einseitig gesehen. Vielfach begriff man die Simulation als "Not- lösung" für die Fälle, in denen aus einer Vielfalt von Gründen eine Optimierung nicht möglich erschien, sei es, da ein konvergierender Algorithmus nicht existierte, sei es, da die verfügbaren Informationen über das zukünftige Geschehen unvollkommen waren. Biethahn unternimmt den Versuch, die beiden Vorgehensweisen aus ihrer alter- nativen Beziehung in eine additive oder komplementäre zu überführen. Dabei wird der I mpetus dieses Forschungsbemühens wesentl ich dadurch charakterisiert, da ein Bei- trag zur Lösung empirisch auftauchender Probleme geleistet werden soll. Gerade dies ist bei der Lagerhaltung schon relativ früh versucht worden. Die von Harris vorgeschla- gene Formel zur Lagerbestandsbestimmung feiert in diesen Tagen die sechzigste Wiederkehr ihres Geburtstages. Dies dürfte aber für den Autor nicht das entscheidende Motiv für die Auswahl des Demonstrationsbereiches einer Kombination von Optim ie- rung und Simulation gewesen sein, vielmehr sind es die in der Praxis wachsenden Probleme bei der Steuerung der Lagerbestände. Hierbei bietet er in mehrfacher H in- sicht eine Reihe neuer Ergebnisse, von denen einige - mir wichtig erscheinend- besonders herausgehoben werden sollen: In einer Vielzahl von Lagerhaltungsmodellen wird mit hohem intellektuellem Auf- wand rein formal unter Vernachlässigung neuerer betriebswirtschaftlicher Grundlagen vor allem im Bereich der Kostenrechnung mit einer Kostenzuordnung bezüglich der Bestände und Güterströme gearbeitet, die mit dem Identitätsproblem (RIEBEL) schlechterdings unvereinbar ist, wenn man von einigen in der Realität kaum vorkom- menden Ausnahmen absieht. - Die Lagerhaltung ist ein Investitionsproblem.
