Flödet av litteratur från Sverige till Frankrike liknar inget annat. Kanoniserade författare som August Strindberg och Selma Lagerlöf har varit överraskande framgångsrika i översättning till franska. Detsamma gäller senare högprestigelitteratur av Torgny Lindgren och P O Enquist. Franska förlag var också bland de första att upptäcka de svenska deckarförfattarna. Rättigheterna till Stieg Larssons Millennium-trilogi köptes av ett franskt förlag innan romanerna hade börjat utges på svenska. Barnlitteraturen däremot, Sveriges kanske främsta bidrag till världslitteraturen, fick ett sent genombrott på den franska bokmarknaden. Det gäller även Astrid Lindgren, den utan jämförelse mest framgångsrika av alla författare som översatts från svenska.

Varför fick den svenska skönlitteraturen just detta mottagande i Frankrike? I denna bok beskrivs hur svensk litteratur har översatts till franska, med ett särskilt fokus på tiden efter 1945. Under denna period har antalet utgåvor av svensk skönlitteratur på franska tiofaldigats. Vilka översättare, förlag och andra aktörer har bidragit till denna utveckling? Hur har de resonerat och verkat för att främja den svenska litteraturens intressen? Vilka litteraturtyper och författarskap har varit särskilt framgångsrika? Dessa frågor besvaras utifrån omfattande statistik som bygger på de senaste bibliografiska förteckningarna.
