I. Geschichtliches 1m Jahre 1892 beantragte der Ingenieur RUDOLF DIESEL beim Kaiserlichen Patent- amt in Berlin Schutz auf seine Erfindung, deren Hauptanspruch lautete, "daB in einem Zylinder vom Arbeitskolben reine Luft so stark verdichtet wird, daB die hierdurch ent- standene Temperatur weit tiber der Entztindungstemperatur des zu bentitzenden Brenn- stoffes liegt, worauf die Brennstoffzufuhr vom Totpunkt ab allmahlich stattfindet ... ". Nach dies em Prinzip - im graBen gesehen - arbeitet auch heute noch jeder Diesel- motor. So sehr DIESEL auch auf den Arbeiten seiner Vorganger aufbaute, so sehr er sich auch den damaligen Stand der Technik zunutze machte, so war doch sein Gedanke neuartig und umwalzend. Fast unbestritten beherrschte die Dampfmaschine das Feld, die Gas- maschine und der Explosionsmotor standen noch im Anfang ihrer Entwicklung. Wahrend die Dampfmaschine mit Wirkungsgraden von 15 bis 18%, die Verbrennungsmotoren mit solchen von h6chstens 22% arbeiteten, zeigte DIESEL einen Weg, der zu Wirkungsgraden bis zu fast 40% flihren konnte.
