Our Mutual Friend is a work of fiction by Victorian author, Charles Dickens. It is his last completed novel combining satire with social analysis. The central theme of the novel is ‘money and its effects on social ties.’ In this novel the author explores the conflict between, doing what society expects and the idea of being true to oneself. John Harmon was supposed to marry Bella to suit the conditions of his father’s will, but initially he refuses to do so. However, consequences and later incidents elaborate upon the sociohuman needs of the human being. Reading this book has not only been rejoicing but a feast to mind and nourishment to soul. Every incident described in the novel leave the reader into a state of introspection, as all the characters appears to be real.

Charles Dickens was a British novelist, journalist, editor, illustrator and social commentator who wrote such beloved classic novels as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, A tale of two cities etc. Many of Dicken’s major works have been adapted for film. The famed British author was the second of eight children. His father was a naval clerk. Charles started supporting his family at the age of 12 after his father was sent to prison for debt. He then travelled to United States and Italy and wrote a travelogue. His 75 readings netted around $95000 in Victorian era which will now be counted $1.5 million US dollars.
