Werden diese Entwicklungstheorien von den Naturwissenschaften intensiv genutzt, so reagieren geisteswissenschaftliche Fächer, wie beispielsweise die Pädagogik, noch mit Zurückhaltung. Ist es möglich, Erziehungs- und Lernmechanismen mithilfe evolutionstheoretischer Erkenntnisse neu zu definieren? Diese und andere Fragen stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit. Zunächst wird ein Überblick darüber gegeben, was man unter "evolutionären Gedanken" überhaupt versteht und wie sie sich im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt haben, wobei bereits ein Bezug zum Gegenstandsbereich der Pädagogik hergestellt wird (Kapitel 1). Im zweiten Kapitel wird die Entwicklungsgeschichte der menschlichen Spezies mit deren Lernfähigkeit in Verbindung gesetzt. Das folgende Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit den zentralen evolutionären Mechanismen von "Variation", "Selektion" und "Stabilisierung". Diese werden erläutert, zum Verständnis der menschlichen Informationsverarbeitung herangezogen und schlie lich auf pädagogische Kategorien (u.a. Unterricht) angewandt. Erziehung und Unterricht sind Grundbegriffe der Pädagogik. Sie sollen im vierten Kapitel in Hinblick auf evolutionstheoretische Ideen beleuchtet werden. Das fünfte Kapitel zeigt auf, mit welchen Umweltproblemen sich der Mensch gegenwärtig, und womöglich in der Zukunft, auseinanderzusetzen hat. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern eine evolutionstheoretische Pädagogik solche Probleme lösen kann. Die Schlussbetrachtung stellt kurz die in dieser Arbeit gewonnenen Erkenntnisse dar.
