«Hice dao a mucha gente ( a 85?), a demasiados .

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

An expose of clerical abuse as revealed in the shocking diary of Alfonso Pedrajas, a Spanish Jesuit stationed in Bolivia.

"I hurt a lot of people (85?). Too many." At the age of just eighteen, Spanish priest Alfonso Pedrajas, known as Padre Pica, became a Jesuit missionary to serve the poor in Bolivia, where he taught until his death in 2009. Behind the faade of a humble clergyman, however, hid a predator who sexually abused the young people he had sworn to protect, especially students at the Juan XXIII School in Cochabamba.

The crimes seemed destined to remain unreported, but in 2020 Pedrajas's nephew, Fernando, found a copy of his priest's diary in the attic of the family home. In it, Padre Pica confessed the horrors he had inflicted on the charges in his care. After failing to receive a satisfactory response from the authorities and the Church, Fernando contacted Julio Nez Montaa, who had reported on similar cases for the Spanish newspaper El Pas.

Nez Montaa followed the story to Bolivia, where he collected testimony from the victims and Padre Pica's fellow Jesuits, several of whom who admitted to covering up the facts. His articles unleashed a media and political firestorm, leading to a series of prosecutions in Bolivia. In this moving chronicle, Nez Montaa interweaves his role in the investigation with the stories of the perpetrators and their victims, revealing the Catholic Church's complicity in allowing the abuse to continue with impunity.
