"Das vorliegende Buch soll kein Lehrbuch im landläufigen Sinne sein; ich wollte keine Kompilation des bisher verarbeiteten Materials durchführen, sondern viel wichtiger schien mir der Hinweis auf jene Punkte, wo die ethologische Forschung einzusetzen hat. Ich bin also auch hier ebenso vorgegangen, wie ich es in meinen Vorlesungen über dieses Thema getan habe. So hoffe ich, den Kreis jener erweitern zu können, die sich der Lösung ethologischer Probleme zuwenden, und derart dieser jungen Richtung der Zoologie neue Arbeiter zu gewinnen. Zwei Grundsätze sind bei meiner Darstellung leitend gewesen und bilden die Basis des ganzen Aufbaus. Der erste Grundsatz ist die Auffassung der Deszendenz-lehre - ich sage ausdrücklich Lehre und nicht Theorie - als einer unerschütterlichen Tatsache, die heute keiner weiteren Beweise, Begründungen und Stützen mehr bedarf. Der zweite Grundsatz besteht in der Auffassung der kausalen Wechselbeziehung zwischen Lebensweise und Anpassung als einer Erfahrungstatsache, die gleichfalls nicht mehr bewiesen zu werden braucht. Was aber zu zeigen war, ist die strenge Gesetzmä igkeit, nach der sich seit den ältesten Zeiten organischen Lebens auf der Erde die Anpassungen vollziehen. Sie ermöglicht uns, aus analogen Anpassungen lebender und fossiler Formen die Lebensweise, also Bewegungsart, Aufenthaltsort und Nahrungsweise der fossilen Tiere zu erschlie en; und das im einzelnen auszuführen schien mir die Hauptaufgabe dieses Buches zu sein."
