Band 2 der "Pathologie" ist ausschlieI31ieh den Erkrankungen der Verdauungs- organe gewidmet. AnlaB zu diesem Vorgehen ist die bedeutende Stellung, die - ausgelost von umwalzenden technischen Neuerungen in der endoskopischen Diagnostik - der Gastroenterologie heute sowohl in der Klinik als auch in der Morphologie zukommt. Dementsprechend geht der Text auch starker ins Detail und ist durch eine hohere Zahl von Literaturzitaten belegt als in den drei tibrigen Biinden. Die heutige Gastroenterologie ist ein Paradebeispiel daftir, daB die enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen Klinik und Pathologie nieht nur zu wichtigen neuen wissenschaftliehen Ergebnissen gefUhrt hat, sondern daB sie gerade auch in der Alltagsdiagnostik unersetzlich ist. Herausgeber und Verlag hoffen daher, mit dem vorliegenden Band eine weitere Brucke zwischen Pathologie, Klinik und Praxis zu schlagen und mit ihm auch den unmittelbar am Patienten tiitigen Arzt als den Partner des Pathologen anzusprechen. Die Tatsache, daB neun der zwolf Beitriige aus der Feder des Herausgebers selbst stammen, bedarf einer kurzen Erlauterung. Das ursprungliche Konzept der "Pathologie" aus dem Jahre 1972 sah ein von nur einem Autor verfaBtes Kurz- lehrbuch vor. 1979 wurde aus verschiedenen Grunden die Planung zugunsten eines mehrbandigen Werkes geandert. Damals waren die eigenen Arbeiten an den gastroenterologischen Beitragen so weit gediehen, daB es vertretbar und - in Hinblick auf einen moglichst fruhzeitigen Erscheinungstermin des Bandes - auch verntinftig erschien, sie mit einigen Ausnahmen (KapiteI1, 2 und 10) in einer Hand zu belassen. Allerdings muBten sie im Rahmen der Neukonzeption wesentlich erweitert und umgestaltet werden.
