Dieses Buch ist gedacht als eine Erweiterung meiner erst en kurzen Schilderung "Paul Ehrlich als Mensch und Arbeiter", die zum 70. Ge- burtstage Ehrlichs, 14. lVIarz 1924, bei der Deutschen Verlagsanstalt Stuttgart erschienen war und von der nm noeh wenig Exemplare in meinem Besitz sind. Ein graJ3er T eil wurde wahrend des nazis tisch en Regimes verniehtet. In dieser ersten Ausgabe hatte ieh mieh darauf be- sehrankt, die personliehen Erinnerungcn aus jenen dreizehn Jahren, (1902-1915), in denen es mir vergonnt war, fiir diesen graJ3en Mensehen und, vissensehaftliehen Forscher zu arbeiten, niederzuschreiben. Ieh habe das, was mir geeignet ersehien, daraus in dieses Bueh iibernommen. In all den J ahren seitdem ist das Interesse an diesem erstaunliehen Menschen- und Forsehersehieksal waebgeblieben und hat sieh vertieft. Aus kleinen Mitteilungen der Familie Paul Ehrlichs, aus Bricfen odfr AuBerungen seiner alten Freundf, aus vielen seiner eigenen Ausspriiehe, die mir wieder in Erinnerung kamen oder fUr die sich Niederschriften von ihm selbst fancIen, aus seinen veroffentliehten Arbeiten ist ein mehr abgerundctes Bild entstanden iiber diesen eigenanigen Menschen, das zwar keineswegs Ansprueh auf eine biographisehe Darstcllung im strengen Sinn.
