Les années Pompidou symbolisent un moment particulier de modernisation et de foi dans l'avenir. En témoignent l'attachement à l'art contemporain, l'édification du Centre Pompidou, mais aussi le lancement de grands projets industriels dont beaucoup continuent à déterminer notre vie quotidienne: programme électro-nucléaire, TGV, Airbus, Ariane, Concorde, Développement des autoroutes, etc. Derrière ce projet politique réel et pensé, il y a des forces plus profondes qui engagent l'ensemble de la société et de l'économie. C'est une époque où les décideurs publics, les grandes administrations, mais aussi des groupes de pensée vont essayer de définir les moyens plus précis, plus rationnels, plus complexes de penser l'avenir. C'est aussi l'époque de la modélisation dans l'administration économique, au Plan et au ministère des Finances; c'est dans les grandes administrations régaliennes la définition de moyens de programmation; c'est la création de structures privées destinées à penser la prospective; c'est la publication en grand nombre d'études, de revues et d'ouvrages... Ce mouvement va profondément réorienter l'action publique et transformer les modes de décision. Cet ouvrage issu d'un colloque organisé par l'Institut Georges Pompidou en 2014 étudie à la fois les nouveaux moyens de projection dans l'avenir, les innovations théoriques et conceptuelles et les reclassements politiques qui en sont issus, ainsi que les doutes et les remises en cause qu'il a suscités. C'est une nouvelle manière de voir l'État et la société dont nous sommes toujours les héritiers.
Gilles Le Béguec est professeur émérite d'histoire contemporaine à l'Université Paris X-Nanterre et spécialiste de l'histoire politique française. Auteur de nombreux ouvrages consacrés notamment aux mouvements gaullistes, il a présidé de 2011 à 2014 le Conseil scientifique de l'Institut Georges Pompidou et a présidé le Conseil scientifique de la Fondation Charles de Gaulle jusqu'en 2017.
Frédéric Tristram est maître de conférences à l'Université Paris 1 - Panthéon-Sorbonne et spécialiste de la politique fiscale. Il a notamment publié en 2005 Une fiscalité pour la croissance. La direction générale des impôts et la politique fiscale en France de 1948 à la fin des années 1960.
