Como él mismo Mañach señala, Perfil de nuestras letras surgió de una sugerencia de la dirección del periódico, para que comenzase a redactar una serie de artículos en los cuales desarrollara algún tema continuo. Entre febrero de 1947 y octubre de 1948 publicó 34 trabajos, que siempre salían en la edición dominical y en la página de Opinión (esto último solo se alteró en una ocasión). Al cabo de casi ocho años, en mayo de 1956 decidió continuar la serie por algún tiempo más. Lo hizo hasta comienzos de agosto de ese año. En esta segunda entrega, la serie mantuvo el espacio dominical hasta fines de junio, cuando pasó a salir indistintamente miércoles, jueves o viernes. Asimismo desde mayo redujo el nombre a Nuestras letras.


Varios de los libros publicados en vida por Jorge Mañach (Sagua la Grande, Cuba, 1898-San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1961) fueron armados a partir de material periodístico: Glosario (1924), Estampas de San Cristóbal (1926), Pasado vigente (1939), Visitas españolas: Lugares, personas (1959). Fue esa la faceta con que se dio a conocer en 1923, en los periódicos El País y Diario de la Marina. También fue la que hizo de él un hombre no solo admirado y leído, sino también influyente en la esfera social. Ese oficio de escribir para el público día a día, solo lo aparcó durante los años en los cuales residió y trabajó como profesor en Estados Unidos (1935-1939) y, luego, al regresar a Cuba, en los primeros años de la década de los cuarenta, cuando por idealismo, como él mismo reconoció, se incorporó a la actividad política. Pero a partir de 1945, volvió al diarismo en la Revista Bohemia y en el Diario de la Marina. En este último medio retomó su célebre columna Glosas, que después pasó a llamarse Relieves. En ambas publicaciones se mantuvo colaborando hasta fines de 1959. Es decir, prácticamente hasta su salida del país.
