Die Untersuchung geht von der Beobachtung aus, da in Schillers Dramenfragmenten ein literarisches Experimentierfeld vorliegt, in dem u.a. angemessene Darstellungsmöglichkeiten für zeitgenössische staatsphilosophische Fragen gesucht werden. Die Fragmente bieten ein weitaus grö eres Spektrum der Verarbeitung des für Schiller zentralen Problems des Verhältnisses von Person und Staat als die veröffentlichten Dramen und dokumentieren den Proze einer literarischen Korrektur der idealistischen Staatsphilosophie.

Zunächst wird Schillers Staatstheorie entwickelt, die dem Individuum die Verantwortung für die Etablierung eines Vernunftstaates auferlegt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird der Gro teil von Schillers Dramenfragmenten in drei Gruppen eingeteilt, die in je verschiedener Weise Umsetzungsversuche und zugleich kritischer Kommentar zur Theorie des Vernunftstaates sind. Es handelt sich um das Projekt eines erhabenen Dramas der idealen Staatsgesinnung, den Versuch einer Gesetzesdramatik und das Modell eines Thronprätendentendramas. Leistungsfähigkeit und Problematik der jeweiligen Modelle werden anhand prozessualer Analysen detailliert untersucht. Über das Scheitern einer Ineinssetzung von Person und Staat und die Entwicklung des Gestaltungsprinzips der Handlungsfreiheit gegenüber dem Gesetz gelingt die Integration verschiedener innovativer Dramenkonzepte in ein Doppelgängerdrama. Dieses wird der Komplexität des Problemfelds gerecht, indem es Person und Staat jeweils legitime, aber sich ausschlie ende Rechtssphären zuordnet. Mit dem Übergang zum vollendbaren Werk im Demetrius wird eine synthetisierende Leistung fa bar, die neue Aspekte in Schillers Dramatik hervortreten lä t.
