Jahr- hunderts die fast ltickenlosen Grundlagen. Anziehend genug schien es schon, dies Gebaude in seiner auBeren und inneren Erscheinung, die Vielfalt dieses Organismus und seiner Aufgaben, wiedererstehen zu lassen. Unmittelbar aber muBte sich der Wunsch einstellen, es mit Leben und Erleben zu erftillen, als aus Akten und Niederschriften die Not der Menschen sprach in einer Zeit, als dies kunstvolle Werkzeug des Staates einer schweren Erprobung unterworfen war durch das Hereinbrechen der Pest. Damit wurde zur Aufgabe, den "Magistrato della sanita", die "Proveditoren und Sopraproveditoren alla sanita" mit allen ihren Helfern yom Arzt bis zum Leichentrager, dazu aber auch die Organe des Staates, den GroBen Rat, den Senat und die Signoria darzustellen in ihrem Kampf gegen den unheimlichen Wtirger mit Waffen, die, aus dem unvollkommenen Wissen der Zeit geschmiedet, bei aller eisernen Konsequenz ihrer Anwendung, dem Gegner die seinen nicht aus der Hand zu schlagen vermochten.
