Séraphin-Joseph Mottet (1861-1930) a dévoué toute sa vie à ce qui était bien plus qu'une passion: l'horticulture. Il entame sa carrière professionnelle dès l'âge de quatorze ans chez une rosiériste de Lyon, puis est employé par le Jardin d'acclimatation de Marseille. Il rejoint Paris en 1880, alors à peine âgé de dix-neuf ans, pour entrer chez Vilmorin-Andrieux, une entreprise familiale qui produit et vend des plantes. Travailleur consciencieux et doué, il parvient à s'imposer au sein de cette prestigieuse maison et occupe dès 1817 le poste de chef du service des cultures expérimentales. Il met son inventivité et son talent au service d'une fleur en particulier: l'iris, pour laquelle il va créer de nombreux hybrides très prisés. Cela lui vaut d'être récompensé par la British Iris Society en 1927. Séraphin Joseph Mottet est également un écrivain prolifi que ainsi qu'un grand conférencier. Il collabore activement avec de très nombreuses revues; on lui doit par ailleurs des traités et des guides, mais aussi la traduction du monumental dictionnaire d'horticulture de l'anglais George Nicholson, véritable ouvrage de référence. Avec ce Petit Guide pratique de jardinage publié en 1894, Séraphin-Joseph Mottet met à la portée de tous aussi bien son érudition que son savoir-faire. Son ouvrage dévoile tout ce que l'on se doit de maîtriser pour aborder sereinement la culture d'un jardin, qu'il soit potager ou bien simplement d'agrément?: préparation du sol, ensemencement, taille, bouture et greffe, récolte, etc. Richement illustré, il détaille entre autres fleurs, arbres et arbustes fruitiers, et de l'aveu même de l'auteur, s'il parvient « à faire connaître les plantes les plus utiles et les plus belles, ce sera là [sa] plus vive satisfaction .
