Aus der historischen Entwicklung des Berufsbildes ist die Pflege mit Attributen wie intuitiv, dienend, gehorsam und helfend behaftet. Um dem heutigen Anspruch einer professionellen und sicheren Pflege gerecht zu werden, sind pflegerische Ma nahmen durch alleiniges Traditions- und Erfahrungswissen nicht mehr vertretbar. Das frühere Fönen und Eisen zur Dekubitusprophylaxe ist beispielsweise nur ein deutliches Plädoyer für die Umsetzung der Ergebnisse aus einer wissenschaftlichen praxisorientierten Pflegeforschung (vgl. Schlömer 2000). Evidence-based Nursing (EBN) ist eine Forschungsmethode, die Pflegekräfte mehr Handlungssicherheit bei ihrer täglichen Arbeit am Patientenbett gibt. Die Ergebnisse einer EBN-Recherche können die Wahl zwischen zwei verschiedenen Pflegema nahmen erleichtern, wenn für die eine zum Beispiel eine bessere Wirkung nachgewiesen ist. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt eine Evidence-based Nursing Recherche zur folgenden Fragestellung dar: Wird bei Patienten mit peripheren Venenverweilkanülen durch Spülungen mit physiologischer Kochsalzlösung eine andauernde Durchgängigkeit der Kanüle erreicht? Durch die eigene Praxisarbeit im stationären Pflegebereich ist die Autorin mit der Problematik der Pflege von peripheren Verweilkanülen täglich konfrontiert. Üblicherweise werden die Kanülen nach Infusionsende, insbesondere nach Gabe von Flüssigkeiten mit einer hohen Osmolarität, mit physiologischer Kochsalzlösung durchgespült. Die Ma nahme ist eine stationsinterne Regelung und soll aus eigenem Interesse durch eine Literaturrecherche in pflegerischen und medizinischen Datenbanken wissenschaftlich begründet werden
