Dieses Buch entstand wie könnte es anders sein aus einer Reihe von Vorlesun- gen, die der Autor an der Universität Heidelberg gehalten hat. Diese Vorlesungen sollten eine Einflihrung in die modeme Phänomenologie der Elementarteilchenphysik vermitteln und für Studenten theoretischer sowie experimenteller Orientierung verständlich sein. Dasselbe Ziel hat sich der Autor mit dem vorliegenden Buch gesetzt. Vorkenntnisse werden nur aus der gewöhnlichen nichtrelativistischen Quantenmechanik vorausgesetzt, wobei als Richtlinie für den Stoffumfang beispielsweise das Buch von Grawert "Quantenmechanik I" (Akade- mische Verlagsgesellschaft, Frankfurt/Main und Vieweg, Braunschweig 1969) herangezogen werden kann. Nun zum Aufbau des vorliegenden Buches. Im ersten Teil werden die Grundlagen der Elementarteilchenphysik erarbeitet, es soll hier die "Sprache" erlernt werden, die der Teilchenphysiker benützt. Ein einleitendes Kapitel ist der speziellen Relativitätsthorie, die in der Elementarteilchenphysik so fundamentale Bedeutung hat, gewidmet, denn Elementar- teilchenphysik ist meist Hochenergiephysik. Dieses Kapitel habe ich unter anderem auf Grund eines Gesprächs mit einem angesehenen deutschen Hochenergie-Experimentalphysiker eingefügt, der mir erklärte, er hätte während seines Studiums von Lorentz-Transformationen blo als Lichtkegel-Automorphismen gehört und erst später erfahren, da die spezielle Relativitätstheorie auch praktische Konsequenzen habe. Weitere Kapitel des ersten Teils behandeln die Dirac-Gleichung, die Feldquantisierung und die allgemeinen Definitionen der S-Matrix, der T -Matrix und des Streuquerschnitts.
