Das Thema einer "Philo sophie der Geisteswissenschaften" hat in der letzten Zeit eine Reihe von neuen Dimensionen gewonnen, durch die ein Zusammen- hang mit allen relevanten philosophischen Richtungen in der Welt entstan- den ist. Seine Behandlung erfordert deshalb eine besondere integrative Be- miihung. In den 50er Jahren konnte dieses Thema in der Tradition der phi- losophischen Hermeneutik, die von Schleiermacher iiber Dilthey und Hei- degger zu R. Bultmann und H.G. Gadamer reicht, fUr westdeutsche Be- diirfnisse mehr oder weniger erschOpfend behandelt werden. Seitdem ist jedoch der Rahmen dieser Tradition provinziell geworden. Er hat die Be- deutung einer in sich begrenzten Position, der mehrere andere zur Seite ge- stellt werden miissen. Die lange zuriickgehaltene Diskussion mit der marxistischen Philosophie, die sich in den 60er Jahren eruptiv zur Geltung gebracht hat, blieb nicht ohne Folgen fUr die Wissenschaftstheorie auf allen Gebieten. Die Kritische Theorie der Frankfurter Schule hat diese Tradition im Rahmen der Methodendis- kussion in den Sozialwissenschaften griindlich und umfanglich auf gear- beitet. Dabei sind vor allem die Arbeiten von J. Habermas fiir die Geistes- wissenschaften und das hermeneutische Problem relevant geworden. In der Auseinandersetzung zwischen Gadamer und Habermas wurden die entschei- denden Diskussionspunkte artikuliert, die aus dieser ersten Ausweitung der hermeneutischen Tradition hervorgehen.
