Bei der Erforschung der Struktur der Materie spielen seit den zwanziger Jahren dieses Jahrhunderts Teilchenbeschleuniger eine wichtige Rolle. Sie liefern die f�r die Experimente mit Atomkernen oder Elementarteilchen erforderlichen hoch- energetischen Strahlen mit 'reproduzierbaren, wohldefinierten Eigenschaften. Im Laufe der Zeit sind die f�r diesen Zweck entwickelten Anlagen vor allem wegen der erforderlichen sehr hohen Teilchenenergien immer gr� er geworden und ha- ben inzwischen Dimensionen von �ber 10 km erreicht, die nur noch im Rahmen von Gro forschungsanlagen gebaut und betrieben werden k�nnen. Daneben hat sich in j�ngerer Zeit eine zweite wichtige Anwendung von Beschleunigern eta- bliert, n�hmlich die Nutzung der sogenannten "Synchrotronstrahlung". Diese wurde erstmals in Elektronen-Synchrotrons beobachtet, nach denen sie auch be- nannt wurde. Wegen ihrer hervorragenden Eigenschaften hat sie sich neben den Neutronenstrahlen zum wichtigsten Werkzeug zur Untersuchung von Festk�rpern entwickelt. Daher werden inzwischen weltweit viele meist kleinere Elektronen- beschleuniger gebaut, die ausschlie lich f�r diesen Zweck optimiert sind. Die Beschleunigerphysik hat sich damit ein recht breites Anwendungsfeld geschaffen. Das vorliegende Buch hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die wichtigsten physikali- schen und technischen Grundlagen der Beschleuniger systematisch zusammen- zutragen und dabei die Anforderungen der Teilchen- und Hochenergiephysik wie auch die Erzeugung der Synchrotronstrahlung zu behandeln. Wegen der gro en Vielfalt der Beschleunigertypen und ihrer diversen Anwendungen war es aller- dings nicht m�glich, alle heute im Beschleunigerbereich wichtigen Teilaspekte hier zu behandeln. Daher wurde bewu t eine Auswahl getroffen, bei der ne- benden f�r alle Beschleuniger wichtigen Grundlagen besonders die Aspekte der Elektronenspeicherringe in den Vordergrund treten.
