Seaweed has many beautiful qualities! Yet, like many things we misunderstand, it is often feared and avoided. This fun and wide-ranging book helps families, teachers, scientists, and indeed anyone to explore the wonderful seaweed ecosystems of our beaches and oceans. Share the delights of stunning photos from Australia and around the world on your fabulous seaweed treasure hunt! This beautiful book was created by Nancy Merridew with a crew of contributors - Holly Baird, Gustaaf Hallegraeff, Gerald Kraft, Jeremy Pickett-Heaps, David Unwin, Richard Wetherbee, and Peter Yates. This edition has been designed to share freely (download a free electronic version at the book's website - www.seaweedpirates.com) or as a gift idea as a book printed by Ingram Spark.

Baird, Holly: - "Holly is an equine veterinarian who loves the ocean and masquerades as a mermaid. She travels the world far and wide for underwater adventures. Holly's favourite place to dive is on her home reefs of Cape Conran in Victoria - with her camera to capture the beautiful underwater life she encounters. Holly shares her photos with you extensively throughout this book, which would not have been possible without her"

Merridew, Nancy: - Nancy loves seaweed. She is a specialist medical doctor and clinical lecturer who also has degrees in marine biology and history. Her idols are Charles Darwin, David Attenborough, and her inspirational teachers. She thanks Tom, Otto, family, friends, and her collaborators. Nancy conceived and wrote this book, took most of the out-of-water photos, self-published the first (print) edition, and facilitated the second (ebook pdf edition; print version available via Ingram Spark). She thanks Tom, Otto, family, friends, and her collaborators.

See Biography, Phycologists: - "Ingram Spark seems not to permit listing more than 3 individual contributors. Therefore our key contributors - Phycologists, Marine Biologists, and other Photographer - are named here in alphabetical order. ***** Professor Gustaaf Hallegraeff of the Institute of Marine & Antarctic Sciences, University of Tasmania, Australia, is devoted to promoting seaweeds and microalgae to the public and students. He is an expert on microalgae's ecological importance and its potential for harmful blooms to impact human health and aquaculture. Gustaaf shared his electron microscopy images, including the culture of Emiliania huxleyi that he created with his colleague Joana Cubillos. ***Dr Gerald Kraft, Biosciences, University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, is an expert in seaweed taxonomy, with a particular interest in red algae, as well as marine and freshwater biology. An enthusiastic teacher and collaborator, Gerry has been inspiring students and colleagues for decades. He shared splendid underwater photos of red algae from Queensland and New South Wales. ***Professor Jeremy Pickett-Heaps was a revered expert in cells, microtubules, microscopy, life sciences, and biomedicine. He pioneered microscopic still images and video techniques and had a true passion for sharing these with peers, students, and the public. Jeremy and his wife, Julianne, had kindly consented for use of his photos on behalf of Cytographics https: //cytographics.com/ ***David Unwin is an engineer, photographer, and action man who loves surfing. His stunning photo of bioluminescence under an aurora australis and the Milky Way Galaxy brings you an extraordinary perspective of the world. ***Dr Richard Wetherbee, Biosciences, University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, is an expert in diatoms, biofouling, and marine and freshwater biology. Rick generously shared the microscopy photo of the recently-described green algae genus, Kraftionema. *** Dr Peter Yates is a marine biologist who has worked around Australia studying ocean species-environment interactions and the implications for management and conservation. He is also an award-winning artist who created our treasure hunt parchments!"
